South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir has dismissed the country’s central bank governor, Johnny Ohisa Damian, the latest in ‌a series of sackings and reshuffles in senior ranks of his government.

According to local media reports, Mr Kiir did not give a reason for the sacking but replaced Mr Damian with Addis Ababa Othow, who held the same position between June and November 2025.

In recent months, Mr Kiir made a series of sweeping changes ‌in the senior ranks of his government, which analysts say signal an effort to consolidate power amid succession uncertainty.

Mr Damian, an economist who served multiple terms as central bank governor in the past, was reappointed earlier this year after previously holding the position on two separate occasions.

South Sudan’s economy faced mounting pressure from declining oil revenues, recurring cash shortages, high inflation and currency depreciation.
