Stakeholders in Southern Adamawa have emphasised the need for a consensus candidate to strengthen the zone’s political influence ahead of the 2027 elections.

Mr Ali Burama, the group’s convener, said this during a stakeholders’ meeting on Saturday in Numan Local Government Area.

The meeting, attended by representatives from the nine local governments, also featured the endorsement of Kwamoti Laori for the senatorial seat.

Mr Burama said the decision followed extensive consultations with traditional rulers, political actors, youth groups and community leaders across the zone.

“Our decision is to secure credible representation. We believe Laori has the competence, experience and vision to deliver democratic dividends,” he said.

He said stakeholders unanimously selected Mr Laori based on his leadership qualities, legislative performance and consistent engagement with constituents.

“We believe in his leadership. He can advocate improved education, economic development and youth empowerment.

“Laori facilitated projects across the 33 wards in his constituency, demonstrating commitment to grassroots development,” Mr Burama said.

He urged other political actors to support the consensus arrangement in the interest of regional development.

He also called on residents to remain peaceful and actively participate in the democratic process as activities intensify.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Information, Mr James Iliya, commended the stakeholders for adopting consensus.

Mr Iliya described Mr Laori as a grassroots politician with a strong understanding of the people’s needs in the district.

He stressed the need to prioritise development areas, including tertiary institutions, skills acquisition centres and infrastructure to boost economic growth.

He expressed optimism that Mr Laori would deliver more if elected senator, noting that the endorsement could shape the election through grassroots mobilisation.

Mr  Laori is yet to formally declare his intention; however, sources said consultations are ongoing ahead of an official announcement.

Highlights of the meeting were the donation of over N20 million by stakeholders to support his nomination forms.
