Marvel and Sony’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day has broken the box office record, earning $355 million domestically (in the United States) for the second-biggest opening weekend in history, behind Avengers: Endgame, which debuted with $357 million.

In its first weekend of release, the adventure film overtook The Odyssey at the global box office, earning $927 million globally and $572 million at the international box office, behind Endgame’s domestic first-weekend record of $1.2 billion worldwide.

The film also outgrossed DC’s Supergirl in just one day, after earning $71.9 million domestically and $125 million worldwide on its opening weekend.

Spider-Man returns to theatres after five years since its last movie, Spider-Man: No Way Home, which grossed $1.9 billion worldwide and became the eighth highest-grossing film of all time.

The film is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal, Mark Ruffalo, Tramell Tillman, among others.

The feat marked the second box office success for Holland and Zendaya, who recently appeared together in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, breaking Robert Downey Jr’s record of $357 million in Avengers: Endgame, as both films race to cross the $1 billion mark.
