Officials of the Lagos State Ministry of Education, on Tuesday, visited Ajara junior and senior secondary schools in Badagry, a day after students were sent home due to flooding.

A teacher, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, disclosed that the visit was to get a firsthand assessment of the impact of the floods on the school premises.

He said that the school had been overwhelmed by water, since the Saturday downpour in Lagos which wreaked havoc in parts of the state.

“Some officials from the Lagos State Ministry of Education visited our school on Tuesday to get a firsthand assessment of the flooding situation.

“They said that they wanted to see what could be done to alleviate the impact of floods on the school premises.

“We told them that lack of good drainage was responsible for the flooding, and they promised to expedite work on the premises, so the students could return to school by Wednesday.

“They asked the principal to recall the students, so, by tomorrow, we hope the students will be back in their classes,” he said.

The premises of Ajara Junior and Senior Secondary Schools as of Tuesday, were still flooded, making teaching and learning impossible.

There was no classroom or office that was not affected by the flood, apart from the rooms located upstairs.

Olusegun Suru, a parent with two daughters in the school, told newsmen in Badagry that his wife called him around 9:30 a.m. on Monday that their daughters had been sent back home.

“When I got back home, they told me that they could not gain access to their school due to the flood that had taken over the whole premises.

“I had to call a teacher who confirmed the incident to me, saying that everywhere was flooded after the downpour, and the school principal had advised the students to stay at home for a week.

“The principal said that this will enable the flood to subside and the premises tidied, before the students resume the following week,” Mr Suru said.

Many communities in Badagry were badly affected by Saturday’s downpour.

Some of the affected communities are Mowo, Ikoga, Angel Gabriel Bus Stop, Low-Cost Housing Estate, Torikoh and Oko-Tipper.
