The Nigerian Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers says substandard electrical products will negatively impact the country’s growing economy if not addressed by the concerned bodies.

The NIEEE’s vice president, Felix Adegboye, said this on Wednesday in Osogbo.

Mr Adegboye said that substandard electrical products would not only put the country’s economy in danger but also lead to the destruction of lives and properties.

He said that NIEEE had been collaborating with government agencies, non-governmental organisations, and key stakeholders to address quackery, bribery, and the production of substandard electrical products across the country.

“We have been working with the Standard Organisation of Nigeria and the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency to reduce the production of substandard electrical products. 

“We shall not relent until these electrical products are totally taken out of the system with the support of our sister agencies and stakeholders,” Mr Adegboye said.

According to him, the government is doing its best by putting a vibrant legal framework in place, but NIEEE needs full government support to actualise this course of limiting substandard electrical products.

“I want to say that when there is full government support, those involved in the practice of producing substandard electrical products will be wary of producing such products for the economy. 

“Also, enforcement of policies and programmes that will limit substandard electrical products will go a long way in promoting economic development and growth in the country,” he said.

NIEEE is currently holding its 21st International Conference and Exhibition of Power and Telecommunications in Osogbo.

The conference is expected to end on Thursday with a communique that would benefit the country’s growing economy.
