At least nine people were killed in a plane crash at Port Sudan airport on Sunday, the Sudanese army said in a press release.

The army stated that the plane crashed due to a technical failure, and four military personnel were aboard the flight.

The office of the armed forces spokesperson confirmed the plane crash in a statement.

“A civilian Antonov plane today crashed at Port Sudan Airport due to a technical failure, leading to the deaths of nine people, including four military personnel. One child survived the crash,” said the army.

The crash occurred on the 100th day since fighting broke out between the army and the Rapid Support Forces paramilitary group in Khartoum and Western Sudan states.

Port Sudan, located on the country’s eastern coast, has been under the control of the Sudanese army since the war began.

The war in Sudan has killed over 3,900 people, according to the latest toll from the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED)

Over 2.2 million people have been internally displaced since the start of the war, according to the International Organization of Migration.

The Port Sudan airport, which witnessed the crash, is the only functional airport in the country, making it an important transit point for foreign aid.
