Sudan, South Sudan revive security talks after defence minister’s visit

Sudan and South Sudan are set to revive talks on security cooperation following an official visit by Sudan’s Minister of Defence, Hassan Dawoud Kabron, to Juba.
The visit was held in Juba according to a bulletin issued on Wednesday by Omar Muhammad, the press secretary at the Embassy of the Republic of Sudan in Abuja.
Mr Kabron disclosed that the visit focused on implementing agreements signed by the Joint Political and Security Committee.
The minister said the visit achieved its intended objectives and paved the way for the resumption of negotiations on outstanding security issues between Khartoum and Juba.
He said renewed engagement would strengthen stability, security and military cooperation along the shared border.
Mr Kabron said the talks would also help advance the common interests of the two countries amid Sudan’s ongoing conflict.
The two neighbouring countries have maintained security and political mechanisms aimed at managing issues along their border and strengthening bilateral cooperation.
The relationship has, however, been affected by security concerns and instability linked to the conflict in Sudan, which began in April 2023.
The renewed engagement is expected to provide a platform for both countries to address outstanding security matters and strengthen coordination on border-related issues.
The minister said continued cooperation between Sudan and South Sudan was important to maintaining stability and promoting the interests of both countries.
