Two Russian embassy employees were killed in a suicide bombing attack in the Afghan capital Kabul on Monday.

Kabul police spokesperson Khalid Zadran said the suicide bomber blew himself up among a crowd outside Kabul’s Russian embassy in the city’s police district seven.

“Security forces targeted the suicide bomber before he could reach his intended goal, which caused an explosion,” Mr Zadran added.

The police official said the area had been cordoned off and comprehensive investigations were underway.

According to a Taliban security official, one Afghan civilian was also killed, and 10 others were wounded in the blast.

A witness said the blast happened when the embassy’s employee was reading the names of Afghans waiting at the gate for visas.

Darulaman, a western Kabul neighbourhood, had come under attack many times in the past.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

Since the Taliban’s return to power, the Islamic State militant group has carried out a series of deadly attacks in the country.
