Nigeria’s Super Eagles lock horns with South Africa today in a pivotal 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier, but much of the pre-match focus has shifted to the deteriorating playing surface at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein.

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos spared no words in his scathing assessment. After inspecting the field, he called the surface “awful” and revealed his deep disappointment, noting that organisers had ample time, “six weeks to fix it”, but failed to deliver the quality he and his players deserved.

The pitch crisis had sparked a flurry of confusion in the lead-up to the match.

In response to concerns, CAF and FIFA reportedly considered switching the venue to Dr Molemela Stadium, only to reverse course after further inspections and greenlight Free State Stadium for today’s tie.

Nigeria, already grappling with the absence of talisman Victor Osimhen due to a shin injury, will now look to Tolu Arokodare to deliver the attacking spark needed.

As it stands, Nigeria lingers outside the top two in Group C and needs a win to keep their World Cup qualification hopes alive. A victory in Bloemfontein could reignite their campaign; a loss would be a serious blow.

Kick-off is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. Nigerian time (16:00 GMT) at the Free State Stadium.
