Super Eagles to face Poland, Portugal in June friendly games
The Super Eagles will face Portugal in an international friendly match in June as part of the European country’s final preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
On Thursday, the Eagles’ official X account stated that Nigeria would play Portugal on June 10, seven days before the Cristiano Ronaldo-led team’s opening game of the World Cup against DR Congo.
Before that, the Super Eagles are first scheduled to take on Poland on June 3. Poland narrowly missed out of the World Cup after the Biało-Czerwoni were beaten 3-2 by Sweden in their final European qualifying playoff match.
“The #SuperEagles are set to face Poland and Portugal this summer!,” the official X account posted.
Nigeria lost 4-0 at the Estadio Jose Alvalade in Lisbon last time the West African country played Portugal before the 2022 European Championship.
Meanwhile, the last match between Nigeria and Poland was in March 2018, which the Eagles won 1-0 courtesy of a decisive penalty by Victor Moses at the Stadion Miejski in Wrocław.
Following the failure to qualify for the World Cup, the two friendly matches will allow head coach Eric Chelle to test his team ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers starting in September.
Reports noted Chelle is targeting more foreign-born Nigerian players to bolster the national team, and the two games would offer opportunity for their assessment before competitive fixtures.
