Super Falcons crash out of WAFCON, fail to secure 2027 World Cup automatic spot
Nigeria’s Super Falcons on Sunday failed to automatically qualify for the 2027 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, after crashing out of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, in the quarter-final.
The ten-time champions’ quest for an 11th title came to an end after losing 1-0 to the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon, through a powerful freekick by 19-year-old Myriam Nyadjou, in the 19th minute.
Though the Super Falcons dominated the game, they were however unable to convert their chances, due to their opponent’s resolute defending, especially with several wonderful saves by their goalkeeper Michaely Bihina, voted Woman of the match.
The result meant Nigeria failed to qualify for an AFCON semi-final in their history while Cameroon recorded their second-ever victory over Nigeria in 14 meetings, with the first being in a friendly in Yaounde in February 2026.
The Super Falcons’ failure to secure a World Cup automatic spot, meant they must compete through the CAF World Cup play-offs scheduled for the losers of the quarter-finals, for the remaining intercontinental qualification opportunities.
