The Supreme Court of Nigeria has sacked all local government chairmen in Rivers State after the apex court ruled that the election conducted by the state electoral commission in October 2024 was invalid.

In a judgment delivered by Justice Jamilu Tukur, the court invalidated the election, stating that its conduct grossly violated the Electoral Act.

Mr Tukur ruled that the conduct of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission did not comply with the Electoral Act and guidelines as the electoral body continued voter registration after announcing an election date.

The court held that the processes leading to the conduct of the election blatantly violated section 150 of the Electoral Act and subsequently declared it void.
