Surety charged with obstruction of justice as suspect flees in Lagos

A 62-year-old man, Raimi Adebayo, who stood as a surety for a run-away defendant, appeared before a magistrates’ court in Ojo, Lagos, on Thursday on a count charge of conspiracy, obstruction, and perversion of the course of justice.
He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The prosecutor, Simon Uche, told the court that the defendant stood as a surety for a man identified as Ganiyu Samod in suit number Oj/1/8/2022.
Mr Uche said that the surety swore an undertaking to produce the defendant in court for trial.
He, however, said that the surety failed to produce the defendant for trial on September 16, 2022, February 17, June 23, September 15, 2023, and other dates.
According to the prosecutor, the surety never produced the defendant for trial.
He said that the offences contravened the provisions of Section 97 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
Magistrate L. K. J. Layeni granted the surety bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.
He adjourned the case to October 13 for trial.
