Surety in court over alleged failure to produce defendant

A 36-year-old man, Bright Mohammed, who stood surety for a defendant, on Tuesday appeared before an Iyaganku Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan, Oyo State, for allegedly perverting Justice.
Mohammed, whose address was not stated, is standing trial on charges bordering on perversion of justice.
He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The prosecutor, Inspector Adeshina Folaranmi, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on April 2, at the police command monitoring unit in Eleyele, Ibadan.
Mr Folaranmi alleged that the defendant stood surety for one Ayotunde Fanimo, facing trial in a case of obtaining money by false pretence and stealing.
According to him, the defendant willfully failed to produce Fanimo in court, with intent to pervert the cause of justice.
The offence contravenes the provisions of section 126 of the Criminal Law of Oyo State, 2000.
The Magistrate, Oluwabusayo Osho granted the defendant bail in the sum of five million naira, with two sureties in like sum.
She adjourned the case until July 6, for hearing.
