Suspected IPOB attackers open fire on Nigerians in Ebonyi market
A group of armed men suspected to be members of the Indigenous People Of Biafra ( IPOB ) today attacked unsuspecting Nigerians at Ishieke Market in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State capital.
The group of armed men were seen in the online footage opening fire at Nigerians in the market, insisting on the release of their leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
The armed men stated that the release of Mr Kanu was the only condition for ending the sit-at-home order enforced in the South-East.
Over eight armed men wore red regalia while chanting “Release Nnamdi Kanu ”, and “No Nnamdi Kanu, No Peace ! ” as they opened fire on passersby in the market.
They also set some properties ablaze, including a tricycle parked at the roadside.
The market was immediately deserted due to the activities of the armed men who went from store to store, spreading terror. There was no sign of any Nigerian security outfits on the scene.
Mr Kanu was arrested in Kenya and extradited to Nigeria in June 2021. He has been facing charges bordering on treason since his arrest.
An appeal court freed him in October 2022, but he is still being held by State Security Service (SSS) operatives.
