Switzerland bundle defending champions Italy out of Euro 2024

Impressive Switzerland thrashed defending champions Italy 2-0 in their round of 16 encounter on Saturday, contrary to predictions tipping Italy as favourite to make it to quarter-finals of the ongoing Euro 2024.
Dominating the game from the blast of the whistle, Switzerland cruised brilliantly into the quarter-finals at Olympiastadion Berlin Stadium.
Swiss took the lead in the 37th minute as Ruben Vargas delivered a fine cross to Remo Freuler, who launched a low shot into Gianluigi Donnarumma’s net.
Though behind the Swiss into the first half break, all hope was not lost by Italy, the defending champions.
But Vargas fired in another goal for Switzerland a few seconds into the second half, sealing Italy’s fate.
Italy had their first shot on target in the 73rd minute delivering a below-par performance that saw Swiss grab a deserved win.
This made it Swiss’ second consecutive time of reaching Euros’ quarter. In the last edition, the Swiss were knocked out in the quarter-finals by Spain via penalty shootout.
