Agriculture minister says strengthening animal welfare standards and adopting sustainable livestock production systems will boost Nigeria’s food security and economic growth.
Mr Abba assured stakeholders that all reports would be treated professionally and in the collective interest of the poultry sector.
Avian influenza, popularly known as bird flu, has killed 300 birds on a farm in Plateau.
Mr Ibrahim-Sanchi added that the ministry, in collaboration with sister ministries and agencies in Kebbi, was trying to sensitise the public to bird flu.
“It is, therefore, imperative that the sector be given the utmost priority in national economic policies and future budgets.”
The vaccination would target 247,000 cattle, 51,000 poultry, 152,000 sheep and goats.
The officials said that quarantine measures had been taken on the two affected farms, including access blockades, a mass cull of poultry, and an epidemiological investigation.
Live poultry, birds, raw/uncooked products, ostriches, and raw ostrich products from the two countries have been suspended.
Nine poultry farms were affected by the outbreak in two local government areas of the state.
