This was announced in a press release signed by the national publicity secretary, Debo Ologunagba.
Mr Ologunagba said that the NWC took the decision after extensive deliberation on issues relating to the Katsina State chapter of the party.
The party said that a suspension letter on social media, purportedly signed by its national chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, was a fake.
“The PDP is therefore on course and we are determined to pursue the case to its logical conclusion.”
The PDP had earlier demanded the resignation of Mr Yakubu.
The suspension was ratified by the PDP National Working Committee after an emergency meeting on Friday in Abuja.
Mr Ologunagba said the PDP remained proud of Mr Jonathan for his achievements in key sectors.
The party said the Rivers governor was driven by the PDP’s policies and programmes.
Mr Ologunagba called on President Muhammadu Buhari to ensure and guarantee peaceful, free, fair and credible 2023 general elections.
