The lawmakers are seeking imprisonment of four years or a fine not exceeding N200,000 for any person who performs female genital mutilation.
The bill proposes a fine of N200,000 or imprisonment for six months or both.
Mr Edun said he would be stepping down the motion because of the need to consult widely.
“They have to take us to the land they cleared,” the committee’s chair said.
Mr Igbakpa moved the motion during the plenary on Wednesday in Abuja under matter of urgent national importance.
