In the capital Moscow alone, there were about 530 protesters in custody; in St. Petersburg 480.
The Ukrainian authorities said that 25 people, including two children, had died in the attack, while at least 30 others were injured.
The Russian military said it found the bodies of 152 Ukrainian fighters in the underground bunkers of the Azovstal steelworks in Mariupol.
In addition to the air force attacks, Russian missile forces and artillery also shelled 1,053 military objects, said the defence ministry.
Top Ukrainian official rejected Russian claims that it had taken control of the port in Mariupol, and over 1,000 Ukrainian troops surrendered.
The Russian military claimed that it launched strikes on 32 military targets in Ukraine during the night.
Mr Konashenkov said the Russian forces fired on 81 military targets on Thursday, with Moscow intensifying its attacks on Ukraine.
