The attack took place shortly after midnight
Israel’s defence minister, Israel Katz, said the objective was to eliminate threats and protect communities in northern Israel.
The IDF however did not provide further details about the incident.
Just days earlier, Israel had announced the arrest of members of a “terror cell controlled by Iran” operating in Syria.
Defence Minister Israel Katz announced that he had instructed the army to “take decisive and uncompromising action” in response to the incident.
The IDF described him as “an Iranian terror network operative.”
In both areas, military positions had been attacked and several Palestinians killed, the IDF reported, terming them “terrorists.”
Several wanted Palestinians have been arrested during the operation, according to the military.
Hostages who were freed in negotiations between Israel and Hamas said Mr Dancyg had given history lessons during their captivity in Gaza.
“As long as Hamas retains a hold in the Gaza Strip, it can rebuild and strengthen itself,“ Israeli officials have said.
