Two drones intercepted from ‘direction of Lebanon,’ say Israel Defence Forces
The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) said early Tuesday that it intercepted two drones approaching from “the direction of Lebanon.”
According to the military, at 4:43a.m. (0243 GMT), two unmanned aerial vehicles crossed into Israeli territory from Lebanon before being intercepted.
They however did not provide further details about the incident.
The announcement came hours after Israel reported striking sites belonging to the Lebanese Shiite militia Hezbollah in Beirut.
The escalation followed the reported killing of Iran’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, on Saturday in what was described as a joint U.S.-Israeli attack.
In response, Hezbollah fired several rockets into Israel on Sunday night, prompting Israeli strikes on multiple targets, including in suburbs of the Lebanese capital.
The Lebanese government subsequently declared Hezbollah’s “military activities” illegal, marking a significant shift in the group’s status within the country.
Hezbollah, which wields considerable political and military influence in Lebanon, had previously been regarded by some Lebanese factions as a resistance movement.
Backed by Iran, Hezbollah is widely considered Tehran’s most important non-state ally and a central player in its longstanding confrontation with Israel.
