“I am here because Donald Trump raped me, and when I wrote about it, he said it didn’t happen,” Ms Carrol responded when asked why she was at the court on Wednesday.
Mr Trump, the leading Republican candidate for president in 2024, is currently the subject of numerous lawsuits and investigations.
“I realise that words of apology will only ring hollow here today and that words of apology cannot undo the damage that I have so clearly caused.”
Mr Benjamin is accused of conspiring to direct state funds to a real estate investor in exchange for thousands of dollars for illegal campaign contributions.
