The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics has suspended its planned nationwide strike following positive steps taken by the federal government to address the union’s demands.
Mr Piwuna explained that rivalry among the unions would not benefit the university system.
He said the ultimatum was due to continued neglect of the education sector and lecturers’ welfare by both federal and state governments.
Mr Pearse said the PDP crisis was caused by some internal and external elements.
He said the decision was in line with the union’s concern for the tertiary education system so as not to disrupt the academic calendar.
Mr Namo said the union, after its National Executive Council (NEC), held between August 17 and August 18, issued a 21-day ultimatum.
The Nigeria Labour Congress has urged the federal government to implement policies that prioritise the welfare of Nigerians.
The chairman particularly called on the federal government to implement the renegotiated agreement reached with the union in 2009.
According to him, government should, as a matter of urgency, look into the energy sector and ameliorate people’s hardship.
“Consequent upon the above, all members across board are advised to ensure total compliance,” they said in the statement.
