The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Imo has called on the government to improve the electricity supply and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses to cushion the ease of transportation problems in the state.

The congress’s state chairman, Chigaemezu Nwaigwe, made the call on Wednesday at a news briefing in Owerri.

The chairman, who spoke on behalf of the national president, Joe Ajaero, said that the address was a continuation of a two-day nationwide protest on the high cost of living in the country organised by the NLC.

Mr Nwaigwe further said the call was in line with the October 2023 agreement with organised labour, which included the provision of alternative means of transportation for workers and the implementation of a revised living wage.

“The National Executive Council (NEC) of the NLC met and resolved that government be reminded of the October agreement between the Federal Government and the organised labour, which includes ensuring food security and provision of alternate means of transport for workers.

“Since most persons can no longer enter the farms because of insecurity, government must adopt measures to mitigate suffering by securing farmlands and opening up the country’s borders,’’ he said.

He added that “we call for the facilitation and implementation of a living wage and the immediate removal of levies from petty traders by government at all levels’’.

According to him, government should, as a matter of urgency, look into the energy sector and ameliorate people’s hardship.

These, he said, would ease the suffering and restore workers confidence in the system.
