The State Security Service (SSS) says it intercepted syndicates allegedly selling the newly redesigned naira notes across the country.
The committee on Sunday rejected a two-week extension for the deposit of old naira notes announced earlier in the day by Mr Emefiele.
“The CBN has massively supplied the new notes to commercial banks to dispense both at counters and ATMs.”
At Ecobank at Ikpoba Hill, bank customers could only withdraw N5,000 with the new notes across the counter, while the bank’s ATM was not dispensing cash.
The apex bank said “This will ensure quick and wider circulation of the new notes across Nigeria.”
Mr Halilu asserts that the new naira notes’ ability to leave intaglio ink traces when rubbed on completely white surfaces serves as a security feature.
