NBS said 42 per cent of the health workers received bribes to speed up the procedure, and 15 per cent also took bribes to make the finalisation of the procedure possible.
The vice president urged Nigerian doctors to stay back at home and not leave to seek greener pastures abroad.
“Every drug taken can be a source of disorder. Drugs can affect the kidney and the liver and should be taken only on physicians’ prescription,” one of the doctors warned.
The professor said that migration of doctors had become a challenge to the college in terms of having enough doctors to train.
“I have always preached and maintained this same position that ‘Our brain drain today will be our brain gain tomorrow’.”
The Lagos deputy governor is proposing that “If 1,000 doctors go to the United Kingdom, the UK government must pay us something back in return.”
“If you think migrating legally is good for you, all well and good. By all means, go!”
Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) said the shortage of staff at the hospital “is no longer acceptable”.
The interviews had been scheduled for 8:00 a.m. and many of the doctors had been arriving at the venue as of 5:30 a.m., a doctor said.
