UN high commissioner for human rights, Volker Türk, has launched a $400 million appeal for 2026 as his office continues to operate “in survival mode”.
The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, ratified by 175 countries, protects the right to life.
“We are shocked at the recent surge in mass abductions in north-central Nigeria,” OHCHR said.
Mr Ojukwu noted that the 2025 campaign is structured to ensure broad national engagement, strong advocacy, and meaningful action.
The UN urged potesters to demonstrate peacefully.
Mr Türk cautioned against a “one-size-fits-all approach,” as reparatory justice should respond to the specific demands of affected communities.
OHCHR has received information from family members and lawyers regarding more than 100 Venezuelans believed to be held in CECOT.
The conflict has caused the world’s worst displacement crisis, with over 12 million displaced and 3.3 million fleeing across borders.
Displacement camps on the city’s outskirts, previously hosting more than 300,000 people, are emptying out as people flee the violence.
Mr Türk warned in a statement on Friday amid reports that dozens were brutally killed in ethnically targeted attacks in Al Jazirah state in the southeast.
