The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Friday unveiled 16 days of activities lined up for 2025 activism against Gender-Based Violence (GBV), starting from November 25.

The commission’s executive secretary, Tony Ojukwu (SAN), disclosed this in Abuja at a news conference to unveil the activities to the public.

The theme for the 2025 activism is “Unite to End Digital Violence Against All Women and Girls.”

Mr Ojukwu said that each year, from November 25 to December 10, the world unites to raise awareness and take action against GBV.

“Nigeria is no exception. The NHRC stands firmly with survivors, with women and girls across the country, and with communities demanding justice, safety, and equality.

“GBV remains one of the most pervasive human rights violations in the world and in our country.

“These 16 days remind us that any form of violence is unacceptable and that every voice, especially the most vulnerable, must be heard, supported, and protected,” he said.

Mr Ojukwu noted that the 2025 campaign is structured to ensure broad national engagement, strong advocacy, and meaningful action.

According to him, the commission will carry out simultaneous activities in all the 36 states of Nigeria and the FCT.

He stated that the activities will begin with a roadshow in collaboration with stakeholders and partners, starting at the NHRC state office and ending at the office of the state First Lady, who will then officially flag off the campaign in that state.

Mr Ojukwu stated that it will be followed by an advocacy visit to the speaker of the state House of Assembly.

“On December 10, a nationwide human rights awareness rally will be held across all 36 states and the FCT to commemorate International Human Rights Day.

“Messages from the UN Secretariat, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), and the executive secretary will be delivered at all state offices and the Abuja headquarters,” he said.

On the legacy of their three-year anniversary, Mr Ojukwu used the opportunity to renew the dedication to a Nigeria where violence, discrimination, and harmful practices have no place and where women and girls can live free from fear.

“We use the opportunity to call on the National Assembly to pass the law creating special constituencies for women to aid more women’s participation in politics and governance.

“Refusal to do this constitutes a violation against women because a refusal to implement affirmative action is violence against women, which should be prohibited.

“We will continue to expand our sensitisation campaigns, engage communities, build the capacity of first responders, and leverage digital platforms to amplify messages,” the NHRC boss said.
