Mr Ikenga said preliminary information showed that Mbonu and other gang members kidnapped and tortured their victim to death after ransom collection.
He assured the command’s commitment to maintaining law and order before, during, and after the celebration.
Abiodun Ojelabi, the command’s spokesperson, in a statement, reassured residents of their safety of life and property before, during, and after this festive season.
“It was to the effect that sand had caved in at a local block site, resulting in the deaths of 11 individuals, with several others sustaining injuries,” the officer stated.
Mr Abomtse said the community attacked was opposite a military checkpoint on the Naka- Makurdi Road.
The CP commended the officers for their swift response to intelligence.
Ms John said efforts were currently underway to apprehend other fleeing gang members.
The police command in Enugu says it rescued 28 kidnap victims and detained 10 suspects.
The PPRO noted that the command had intensified efforts to apprehend the other members of the gang.
He said investigations were ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects.
