Japan’s justice minister stepped down on Friday over a scandal in less than a month and forced a last-minute delay for the embattled premier’s Asia tour.
Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has been laid to rest in an elaborate state funeral amid anti-funeral protests.
Indonesia has lifted all restrictions on imports of Japanese food products that were imposed in the wake of the Fukushima nuclear crisis in 2011.
The 41-year-old Japanese man who shot Mr Abe told investigators he had been “dissatisfied” with Mr Abe and had wanted to kill him.
“Currently doctors are doing everything they can,” Mr Kishida told reporters. “At this moment, I am hoping and praying that former PM Abe will survive this.”
The decision came as Japan had been working with the United States and the European countries to step up pressure on Russia.
Mr Kawai was charged with distributing about 28.7 million yen ($251,600) to 100 local assembly members and supporters to buy votes for his wife.
His wife was sentenced to 16 months in prison and suspended for five years.
