On Friday, the U.S. Mission in Khartoum released a statement to clarify the action it took, amid the ongoing violence in the country.
Sudan’s army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan has issued a decree lifting a state of emergency that he imposed after seizing control in a military coup on October 25, 2021.
“We want to act quickly,” Mr Perthes said while expressing optimism that the talks will be like confidence-building measures that will help reduce violence.
The U.S. is urging Sudanese leaders to “set aside differences, find consensus, and ensure continued civilian rule.”
He had succeeded in banning female genital mutilation and helping to get Sudan removed from a United States list of state sponsors of terrorism.
Ousted Sudanese Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdok was reinstated on Sunday.
“I urge, of course, all stakeholders to exercise maximum restraint, but the prime minister and other officials that were unlawfully detained must be released immediately.”
The coup came from soldiers in Sudan military’s armoured corps, as reported by Al Jazeera based on local media accounts.
