The injured involved five federal firefighters, some personnel of the Kaduna Vigilance Service and passers-by.
“Three children died, and we have counted over 15 bodies. A pregnant woman that wanted to buy the fuel also died. The money is still with her.”
“Three persons were burnt to death, while two other victims were rescued with burns and rushed to Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja.”
A witness said that the tanker was leaking and some passers-by drew the driver’s attention to the leakage.
The accident was caused by route violation and dangerous driving, a road safety spokesman said.
The explosion happened after people ignored warnings not to scoop spilled fuel after a petrol tanker collided with a lorry.
