Mr Longsan, who disclosed that the accident involved two vehicles, said seven of the students died on the spot, while one died at the hospital.
Ms Songden said that the university is fully cooperating with security agencies to ensure speedy investigation.
The VC noted that the university currently has over 45,000 students, and it was unfortunate that most of them find it difficult to have access to hostel accommodation.

The victims were abducted from their hostel located off campus on Monday night in Jos while preparing for second semester examinations.
The ASUU chairman added that students will “wait indefinitely, pending the payment of lecturers withheld salaries.”
The project will include bush clearing, construction of drainages and culverts, patching of potholes, and others
The opposition party’s call comes after armed men believed to be bandits invaded Nigeria Defence Academy, Kaduna.
The university management said since the 24-hour curfew in the state was relaxed, there have been intensified killings of its students.
Exams were scheduled to commence on Monday August 16.
