No fewer than 10 persons were killed and another 10 wounded after an oil tanker exploded in the Old Gawu area of Abaji Local Government Area, Abuja.

The explosion occurred on Saturday while some residents went to scoop leaking oil from the tanker.

The tanker subsequently caught fire and killed 10 persons.

Confirming the incident to Peoples Gazette, the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) sector commander in Abuja, Wobin Gora, described the incident as unfortunate.

Mr. Gora said, “The incident happened along Lapai-Lambata road in Niger state. Where it happened happens to be Old Gawu under FCT Abaji area council.”

According to him, the Lambata command of the FRSC carried out a rescue operation, taking the casualties to a hospital in New Gawu.

Also dismissing a report on the number of people involved in the explosion, Mr. Gora said, “I don’t know where they got 11 people. All I know is that 10 people were dead and 10 people were injured. Honestly, I don’t know if almajirai were part of them.”
