The Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (CHADEMA), an opposition party in Tanzania, has called on the United Nations and the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate massive killings during Tanzania’s election, accusing the police of removing bodies of slain protesters from hospitals to erase evidence.

Hours after rejecting the election result and vowing not to recognise Samia Suluhu Hassan as president, CHADEMA, in a statement on Sunday, alleged “the police force is moving around to various hospitals to collect the bodies of those killed during the demonstrations, with the intention of erasing evidence and statistics.”

The opposition party said, “We advise and appeal to the international community, especially the United Nations and the International Criminal Court (ICC), to urgently conduct an independent investigation into these killings committed by the government of Tanzania against its citizens and to take appropriate action.”

According to CHADEMA, the existence of pictures and videos showing dead bodies scattered on the streets and reports that some hospitals are overwhelmed by corpses indicate that mass killings are taking place in Tanzania under the oppressive regime of Mrs Hassan and her party.

The opposition party called on the government to immediately restore internet services to facilitate citizens’ communication and enable the provision of other social services more easily.

For three consecutive days, Tanzanians took to the streets in vehement protests over Wednesday’s general election, which featured Mrs Hassan but barred major opposition candidates.

Over 700 people have been killed as police clash with protesters across the country, according to the Chadema opposition party.
