President Bola Tinubu on Thursday launched the Power Force programme to train 5,000 young Nigerians for the nationwide rollout of smart electricity meters.

The initiative, implemented through the Presidential Metering Initiative (PMI) in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, is designed to empower youths with skills and certification.

The Tinubu administration said in a post on X that the programme is designed to address Nigeria’s metering gap, reduce estimated billing, and create employment opportunities for young people.

Below are 10 things to know about the programme

  1. The nationwide programme will train and deploy 5,000 young Nigerians as skilled smart meter installers across the country.
  2. Applications open on Saturday, July 4, and eligible young Nigerians can apply through the official Presidential Metering Initiative training portal: pmi.naptin.gov.ng
  3. Selected participants will receive practical technical training at no cost, removing a major barrier for young Nigerians seeking entry into skilled technical work.
  4. The programme is open to youth who have completed secondary school, expanding access to technical careers beyond university graduates.
  5. A dedicated quota has been reserved for members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), providing them with practical skills and employment opportunities.
  6. The training will cover smart meter installation, electrical safety, technical procedures, and other practical skills required for professional deployment.
  7. Successful trainees will receive certification that validates their skills and can support further opportunities in Nigeria’s growing power and energy sector.
  8. Successful participants will have pathways to paid employment with monthly earnings ranging from N90,000 to N150,000.
  9. The initiative aims to close Nigeria’s metering gap, as millions of electricity customers remain without meters, leaving too many homes and businesses exposed to estimated billing. The Power Force will build the skilled workforce needed to accelerate the installation of smart meters nationwide and help close that gap.
  10. According to the government, wider deployment of smart meters will improve billing accuracy, reduce estimated billing, strengthen revenue collection in the power sector, and improve transparency for electricity consumers.
