Three Indian nationals have been killed across three Canadian provinces in the past one week.

The victims are Birinder Singh (22) executed in Alberta, Devinder Singh (30) killed in North Battleford (Saskatchewan), and Gurkirat Singh murdered in British Columbia all provinces in Canada.

Last Friday, 25-year-old student, Gurkirat Singh reportedly died in a group clash at Charlie Lake boat ramp in Fort St. John, British Columbia.

Mr Gurkirat, originally from Madhya Pradesh in India, was a student studying Business Management post-degree diploma at Northern Lights College, before his death.

According to a Canadian news outlet CBC, the victim, who worked part-time at a Walmart outlet, was assaulted by about 12 people and later ran over with a vehicle.

The British Columbia’s Royal Canadian Mounted Police, North District Major Crime Unit, said it had commenced investigation into the incident, urging members of the public with useful information to approach investigators.

The Canadian police said they were awaiting a postmortem report and would take legal action.

Reacting to the incident on Monday, the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Mohan Yadav, in a post on X, expressed condolence to Mr Gurkirat’s family, promising that the Indian government would provide assistance in the victim’s funeral process.

“The untimely passing of Gurkirat Manocha, a promising student from Ujjain, in Canada is deeply saddening. Today, I consoled the bereaved family. I assured them that the Government of India and the State Government will provide full assistance in the funeral process,” Mr Yadav posted.

Similarly, last Friday, 30-year-old Punjabi cab driver, Devinder Singh, was shot dead in a parking lot in North Battleford, west Saskatchewan River, Canada.

Mr Devinder, a native of Daulatpura Neewan in Moga district, was killed by a male suspect, who trailed a woman passenger.

It was learnt that the gunman missed his target and Mr Devinder became his victim.

Commenting on the incident, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) described the incident as a homicide, stating that it had commenced investigation into the incident.

“He received a call from a woman at a motel for a ride. He reached the motel and was waiting for the passenger when the woman came out in a hurry,” the victim’s cousin, Gurjant Singh told The Times of India.

“A person followed her and fired at the woman. Devinder sustained a bullet injury and was declared dead,” he added.

In another separate incident on Saturday afternoon, 22-year-old Birinder Singh was murdered while driving with friends in Alberta, western Canada.

According to the CityNews, the Edmonton resident was killed along Highway 2 road, south of Leduc, in the province.

Mr Birinder, who sat in a black 2012 Honda Civic car, was reportedly shot by an assailant who drove a pickup truck and immediately sped away.

Urging the public to assist with useful information, Alberta’s RCMP Major Crimes Unit said it was working to determine the cause and details of the incident.

Previously in February, Canada’s Minister of State for External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh, while responding to a public inquiry on the spate of targeted attacks against Indians studying in the country, decried Canada’s “highest record” of violence against Indians, particularly students.

The minister said the country recorded deaths of 17 Indian students violently attacked between 2018 and 2025.

He stated, “The government accords high priority to the safety and security of Indian students abroad and monitors incidents of violence against them,” Mr Kirti said.

“Violent and untoward incidents against them are immediately taken up by the Indian Missions/Posts abroad with the concerned authorities of the host country to ensure that they are properly investigated and the perpetrators are punished.”
