Three men in court over alleged possession of hemp

The police on Tuesday, dragged three men, before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court, over alleged possession of hemp.
The defendants are: Adefila Oluwanifemi, 26; Peter Benson, 23; and Jamiu Yekini, 20.
They are standing trial on charges bordering on beng in possession of hemp.
They, each, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The prosecutor, Inspector Akinwale Oriyomi, told the court that the defendants committed the offence on November 15, at about 11:00 a.m. in Ado-Ekiti.
He alleged that the defendants were arrested for being in possession weeds suspected to be hemp and illicit drugs.
Mr Oriyomi said that they were consequently charged.
The offence contravenes the provisions of section 5(b) of the Indian Hemp Act LFN 2004.
The prosecutor urged the court to adjourn the case to enable him to study the file and assemble his witnesses.
Meanwhile, defence counsel, Busuyi Ayorinde, urged the court to grant the defendants bail on liberal terms adding that they will not jump bail.
The Chief Magistrate, Abayomi Adeosun, granted bail to the defendants in the sum of N20,000 each, with one surety each in like sum.
He adjourned the case until January 13, 2026, for hearing.
