A 22-year-old thrift collector, Eniola Sefunmi, on Wednesday appeared before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court over the alleged theft of ₦365,000 in contributors’ funds.

The defendant, of no fixed address, is standing trial on a two-count charge of conversion of funds and breach of peace.

The prosecutor, Sodiq Adeniyi, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on July 13 at about noon at Ekute Area in Ado-Ekiti.

He alleged that the defendant, a thrift collector, stole ₦75,000 belonging to Yusuf Christianah, ₦110,000 belonging to Oyinkansola Ojeleye, ₦90,000 belonging to Yusuf Victoria and another ₦90,000 belonging to Aladetoyinbo Adenike by converting their money for her personal use.

The prosecutor stated that the defendant failed to disburse the money to the contributors’ accounts.

Mr Adeniyi also alleged that the defendant conducted herself in a manner likely to cause the breach of peace.

According to the prosecutor, the offences contravene Section 302 and 181(1)(d) of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against her.

Counsel to the defendant, Etuwewe Bamigboye, urged the court to grant her client bail with a promise that she would not jump bail.

The Chief Magistrate, Dolamu Babalogbon, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Mr Babalogbon adjourned the case until September 24 for hearing.
