A ban on TikTok in the U.S. is set to take effect on Sunday following a Supreme Court ruling dismissing an appeal against banning the social media platform.

The Supreme Court judgement followed a law by U.S. Congress compelling the social media app’s parent company, ByteDance, to sell its stake to an American buyer or risk being banned in the country on January 19 over its ties with China.

Citing concerns about “national security,” the Supreme Court on Friday ruled that the law banning the social media platform owned by a Chinese is to prevent it from obtaining U.S. users’ data.

“TikTok has special characteristics – a foreign adversary’s ability to leverage its control over the platform to collect vast amounts of personal data from 170 million U.S. users,” the Supreme Court decision reads.

The verdict further reads that the law was “designed to prevent China – a designated foreign adversary – from leveraging its control over ByteDance Ltd. [TikTok’s parent company] to capture the personal data of US TikTok users.”

Supreme Court verdicts dismissed opinions that the law banning TikTok violates freedom of speech.

This comes in the run-up to President-elect Donald Trump’s assumption of office on January 20.

Mr Trump’s administration will enforce the ban on TikTok, though how to enforce the ruling is still an issue many experts question.
