Three months before the presidential election, President Bola Tinubu’s administration has approved a six-month N70,000 transport allowance for workers.

The Nigeria Labour Congress announced the approval of the N70,000 allowance in a statement on Tuesday, following conciliation talks with the federal government at the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment.

“The federal government will commence payment of the allowance in November 2026 and will be paid for a period of six months to cushion the effect of the economic challenges faced by the workforce,” the NLC said.

According to the NLC, an agreement was also reached for the payment of 19 months of arrears for health workers.

“The agreement also detailed several other welfare interventions, including the payment of arrears for a peculiar allowance effective from May 2026, and the redemption of nineteen months of arrears for health workers,” the NLC said.

The NLC also urged state and local authorities to consider a similar allowance for workers to cushion the impact of prevailing economic hardships in the country.
