President Bola Tinubu has announced the fulfilment of the $100,000 cash reward promised to each member of the women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their triumph at the 2025 AfroBasket Championship.

After winning their fifth consecutive AfroBasket title in Ivory Coast last year, Mr Tinubu had awarded every member of the team national honours, houses in Abuja and cash rewards, with $100,000 each for the players and $50,000 each for officials.

In a statement published on his official X account on Thursday, Mr Tinubu confirmed that the naira equivalent of the pledged funds had been deposited into the accounts of the players and officials.

Mr Tinubu noted that the payment concluded the fulfilment of the promises made to the team after the initial presentation of national honours and house documents to them.

“Each player has received the naira equivalent of $100,000, while each official has received the equivalent of $50,000, completing their package of cash rewards, national honours and three-bedroom homes in Abuja.

“For the first time, a Federal Government has fulfilled this scale of presidential sporting rewards in full within one year. We had to follow the processes required by law and ensure that every commitment was properly implemented. That took time, but a promise made must be a promise kept,” the president said.

D’Tigress captain Amy Okonkwo, in a video attached to the statement, acknowledged the payment, thanking Mr Tinubu and his wife, Remi, for their continuous support for the team.

Subsequently, Mr Tinubu disclosed that the process of redeeming similar cash rewards pledged to the Super Falcons after their victory at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations was being concluded.

“We are also concluding the outstanding cash rewards for our Super Falcons,” the president added.
