Tinubu govt should help make opposition strong, work: Peter Obi

Peter Obi, a former Anambra Governor and a member of the African Democratic Congress, says the government of President Bola Tinubu should support opposition parties to make them strong and functional.
Mr Obi, who spoke in an interview with Arise TV on Monday, accused the government of destabilising opposition parties.
“The government should ensure the protection of the opposition. In fact, they should make the opposition stronger, make it work,” Mr Obi said.
The former Anambra governor cited how former President Umaru Musa Yar’adua’s government was friendly with the opposition.
“I’ve been in party dispute before under President Yar’Adua. I recall him telling the then INEC that I don’t want any problem in any party. I want the parties to be stable and function very well and we have free and credible election,” Mr Obi said.
Mr Obi accused the Tinubu-led government of destroying the opposition, saying, “Look at what has happened to out democracy. It is not being destroyed. Being destroyed by those wjo yesterday were victims of similar thing, shouting to the world.”
Mr Obi’s statement comes amid an internal leadership tussle rocking the ADC. The ADC has accused the Tinubu government of planting moles in the opposition to destabilise the party.
Meanwhile, Mr Tinubu has denied pushing for a one-party system by destabilising opposition parties. However, he said he is happy the opposition is disorganised, adding that it is not his duty to help them resolve their internal crisis.
