President Bola Tinubu has approved a major shake-up within the Nigerian Armed Forces’ leadership, appointing new military chiefs following a reported foiled coup.

In the new appointments announced in a statement on Friday by presidential aide Sunday Dare, General Olufemi Oluyede immediately takes over as the Chief of Defence Staff, succeeding General Christopher Musa. 

The president also approved the appointment of Major-General W. Shaibu as the new Chief of Army Staff, while Air Vice Marshal S.K. Aneke becomes the new Chief of Air Staff. 

Similarly, Rear Admiral I. Abbas has been named the new Chief of Naval Staff.

However, the Chief of Defence Intelligence, Major-General E.A.P Undiendeye, retains his position. 

The statement said the move was in “furtherance of the efforts of the federal government of Nigeria to strengthen the national security architecture.”

Mr Tinubu charged the newly appointed military chiefs to justify the confidence reposed in them to further enhance the professionalism, vigilance, and comradeship that define the Armed Forces of Nigeria. 

All appointments took immediate effect.
