President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the removal of the Chief Executive of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), Saidu Mohammed, and nominated Rabiu Abdullahi Umar as his successor.

In a statement on Wednesday, Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, said the decision was taken in the public interest.

According to him, the appointment is subject to Senate confirmation.

“This decision, made pursuant to the Petroleum Industry Act 2021, is aimed at strengthening regulatory effectiveness in the midstream and downstream petroleum sector, in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda,” he said.

Mr Umar is a seasoned executive with over 25 years of experience across the energy, manufacturing, and infrastructure sectors, with a proven track record in strategic leadership, operational transformation, and large-scale project delivery.

He studied Accounting at Bayero University and is an alumnus of Harvard Business School.

“Pending Senate confirmation of the new nominee, the most senior official of the NMDPRA will oversee operations in an acting capacity,” Mr Onanuga added.

The president thanked Mr Mohammed for his service and wished him well in his future endeavours.
