Tinubu’s govt distributes 800 bags of rice, garri to Anambra flood victims
The federal government has commenced distribution of food and other relief items to persons affected by the 2024 flood in Anambra.
Zubaida Umar, the director-general of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), delivered the items at Unity Primary School Umuoba-Anam and Umueri Hall Holding Camps in Anambra East and Anambra West LGAs.
Mr Umar was accompanied by Ngozi Ezeachi, the South-East coordinator of NEMA, Enugu Office, Paul Odenigbo, the executive secretary of Anambra State Emergency Management Agency and members of his team.
Mr Umar, who conveyed the condolences and goodwill of President Bola Tinubu, said the food and non-food items were meant to assuage the plight of affected persons in the camp at the moment and that the resettlement programme would come later.
He said the agency had conducted an early flood sensitisation programme in July on proper waste management across the various LGAs considered high-risk flood areas.
Items handed over were 400 bags of 25kg rice, 400 bags of 25kg of garri, 40 cartons of vegetable oil, 40 bags of salt, cartons of seasoning, cartons of tomato paste, cartons of tomato, 1,500 pieces of nylon mats, 800 pieces of blankets and 2,500 pieces of wrappers.
Others included 2,500 pieces of guinea brocade, plastic buckets, clothes, plates, cups, spoons, sanitary pads, toilet soaps, detergent and diapers.
Receiving the items, Ifeanyi Chinweze and Fidelis Nnazo, executive chairmen of Anambra East and Anambra West LGAs, respectively, commended the federal government for the gesture.
