Detty December is the name Nigerians have given to the high-energy festive season that takes over the country every December. It is a period marked by homecomings, packed event calendars, major concerts, cultural festivals, and a surge in nightlife as Nigerians at home and abroad come together to celebrate the end of the year.

More than nightlife, Detty December has grown into a cultural moment that encourages tourism and turns cities, especially Lagos, into vibrant hubs of music, food, and shared experiences.

But Lagos is not the only prime location. Across the country, other states are carving out their own festive identities. From booming concerts to quiet, chilly carnivals, here is our guide to where the celebrations are, and why they matter.

Lagos and Abuja may still be the heart of big concerts and celebrity moments, but places like Cross River, Anambra, and Jos offer their own charms, from rich culture to family-friendly outings and calmer, scenic celebrations.

This blend allows the excitement of the season to reach more parts of the country and gives both Nigerians and those returning home a chance to celebrate in a way that truly feels personal.

Should you want to get ‘detty’ this December, here are the top ten states to consider.

Lagos

Nigeria’s entertainment capital. The city’s December calendar is packed with concerts like Flytime Fest, The Experience, Palmwine Music Festival, and endless beach parties at Ilashe private beach. The nightlife on the Island, from Obi’s house to Quilox to Hard Rock Café, stays alive till dawn. Lagos is also where many Nigerians in the diaspora return for weddings and reunions, turning the city into a non-stop festival.

According to the commissioner of tourism, arts and culture, Toke Benson-Awoyinka, Detty December drew over 1.2 million fun-seekers from Nigeria and the diaspora in 2024.

Why it stands out

Unmatched nightlife, celebrity concerts, beach culture, luxury events, and year-end glamour. In 2024, Flytime Fest drew 30,000 fans to its sold-out venue from December 22to 25.

Abuja

Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, is a destination for high-end, polished entertainment, attracting the country’s political and business elite. Abuja offers a refined Detty December experience.

From rooftop parties in Wuse 2 and Maitama, to resort experiences like ALMAT farms, amusement parks like Wonderland, entertainment centres like Jabi Lake Park, and luxury lounges and restaurants.

Abuja is popular with young professionals seeking premium nightlife without the fast-paced Lagos lifestyle. Never mind that Abuja is the FCT but it is listed here.
Why it stands out

High-end restaurants, art exhibitions like Moeshen art gallery, and resort stays make it a classy festive escape. Luxury parties, high-profile concerts, elegant dining, and calmer traffic.

Oyo (Ibadan)

Ibadan’s nightlife has seen a major revival in recent years. Clubs stay buzzing, while the Ibadan Festival keeps the city alive through December. Food lovers can also enjoy street food like suya and amala, as well as art exhibitions popping up around the city.

Why it stands out

Affordable fun, Home to the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), which attracts visitors for quiet nature walks and relaxation, contrasting with the city’s nightlife. Also features historical sites, such as Bower’s Tower.

Appeals to families and individuals seeking a vibrant celebration without the high cost and intense pressure of Lagos. It is the destination for the discerning, culture-appreciating crowd.

Rivers (Port Harcourt)

The oil-rich city combines culture, nightlife, and good food. During December, lounges and clubs around GRA and Stadium Road stay busy, while outdoor shows like Street Jamz and PH City Carnival attract crowds.

Why it stands out

Vibrant nightlife, strong music culture, and a famous street food scene.

Cross River (Calabar)

The Calabar Carnival attracts locals and foreigners alike every December. Beyond the parade, visitors enjoy boat cruises, music performances, and delicious seafood at the Marina Resort.

The city’s warmth and hospitality make it a more relaxed yet festive alternative to Lagos.

Why it stands out

Cultural parade, tourism appeal like Obudu mountain resort, family-friendly atmosphere, and aesthetic scenery.

Edo (Benin)

Benin City has steadily grown into a lively December destination that effectively blends homecoming culture with high-energy entertainment, making it a powerful force in the South-South festive economy.

The city’s nightlife around GRA, Sapara, and Sapele Road becomes more vibrant during the festive season, with lounges, clubs, and live-band spots hosting both locals and returning diaspora.

There are annual festivals, such as the Igue festival, a royal festival of thanksgiving celebrated by the Oba (King) and the people of Benin in the last weeks of December.  Many families also return home in December for weddings, reunions, and ceremonies, creating a warm, communal atmosphere in the city.

Why it stands out

Beyond entertainment, Benin offers a strong cultural pull. Visitors explore the National Museum, royal artworks, and historical sites that tell centuries of Benin Kingdom history.

Enugu

The Coal City (042!) has quietly become a December hotspot, especially for homecomings. The city’s New Yam Festival and Enugu Countdown blend culture and entertainment.

Enugu also offers a booming lounge scene and scenic hangouts like Nike Lake Resort, perfect for those who want festive fun without stress. Attractions like the Ngwo Pine Forest and Cave, Awhum Waterfall, and Nike Lake Resort are heavily visited during the season for picnics, nature retreats, and family outings.

Why it stands out

Provides a balanced Detty December, offering cultural immersion, nature escapes, and modern shopping/dining experiences (Polo Park Mall, Nike Lake Resort).

Delta (Asaba/Warri)

Delta state offers a blend of celebrity-studded parties in Asaba and street-style celebrations in Warri. Movie stars and influencers often host events there, while the Asaba food festivals add colour to the city, Warri also hosts different types of rave parties. For many South-South indigenes returning home, Detty December in Delta is a reunion of culture and music.

Why it stands out

There are lively street parties, appearances by Nollywood actors, food festivals, and raves.

Anambra (Onitsha/Awka)

Anambra comes alive with traditional celebrations and lavish weddings. Awka and Onitsha host large-scale homecoming parties, masquerade displays, and concerts that attract Igbo celebrities and diaspora returnees. It’s festive yet deeply cultural, a perfect balance between modern fun and heritage. Places like Ogbunike caves for fresh air and nature views.

Why it stands out

Cultural festivities, luxury weddings, and Igbo homecomings.

Plateau (Jos)

Jos remains a northern gem for those seeking a cool, Christmas-like atmosphere. With its chilly weather, scenic views, and events like the Jos Carnival, it attracts music lovers and hikers. The city’s hospitality and natural beauty make December in Jos both peaceful and memorable.

Daytime is for relaxing with family members and close friends, and in the evening, places are booming with concerts, street food, and block parties.

Why it stands out

Cool climate, mountain scenery, rich in fruits like strawberries and agbalumo at very affordable prices. Together, these ten states paint a fuller picture of what Detty December means to Nigerians.
