Top traditional models from Nigeria, China honoured for promoting cultural heritage

The Chinese embassy in Nigeria has honoured the top ten traditional models from both Nigeria and China for their efforts in preserving and promoting cultural heritage through fashion.
The China-Nigeria fashion show, hosted on Sunday in Abuja, aimed to deepen cultural relations between the two nations by highlighting the beauty and significance of traditional clothing.
The event was jointly hosted by the China Cultural Centre and the China General Chamber of Commerce.
The event featured a runway show showcasing a diverse range of cultural garments, from the exquisite qipaos of China to the vibrant ankara and agbada of Nigeria.
According to Li Xuda, cultural counsellor of the Chinese embassy, fashion serves as more than just clothing; it is a form of storytelling and cultural expression.
Mr Li emphasised that by honouring these traditional models, both countries were celebrating their rich heritage and promoting unity among their peoples.
“Our objective is to preserve cultural legacy and enhance ties between Nigeria and China,” Mr Li stated.
He explained that with the 2024 FOCAC summit on the horizon, the fashion show beautifully showcased the splendid attire of both China and Nigeria, embodying a spirit of mutually beneficial cooperation.
Mr Li also revealed plans to introduce Nigerian fashion designs in China, establish fashion training initiatives, and invite Nigerian designers to engage in cross-cultural collaborations.
Muhammed Suleiman, president of the Society of Nigerian Artists, expressed optimism about future collaborations between the two nations, envisioning a deeper cultural fusion and expanded global platforms for Nigerian designers to exhibit their creations.
Sarafina Christopher, an awardee from Nigeria, recognised for her dedication to sustainable fashion practices while honouring her Hausa heritage, conveyed her gratitude to China for its continuous support in fostering people-to-people exchanges.
“This award is a collective honour for every Nigerian who values the beauty of our culture.
“We must continue to champion our traditional attire, not just locally but on a global stage,” Ms Christopher stressed.
The awards included certificates, sashes, and cash prizes for the top models from both China and Nigeria, reinforcing the spirit of cultural exchange and appreciation.
