Two traditional rulers in Bauchi State have called on journalists to uphold responsible, development-driven reporting that bridges the gap between the government and the downtrodden.

The traditional rulers, the emir of Duguri, Adamu Muhammad, and the emir of Lame, Aliyu Yakubu, made the call on Friday.

The appeal came during a courtesy visit by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) State Council, led by its chairman, Umar Sa’idu.

The emir of Duguri commended journalists for highlighting issues affecting citizens’ well-being and for holding the government accountable in ways that promote growth and development.

He urged media practitioners to sustain coverage of developmental matters, noting that the press played a vital role in societal reorientation and democratic consolidation.

Similarly, the emir of Lame advised journalists to remain steadfast in professionalism and integrity.

He also called on Governor Bala Mohammed to consider engaging retired veteran journalists in his administration, noting that their wealth of experience could serve as an asset in repositioning the state for progress.

Recalling his career, Mr Yakubu said his experience as a journalist with Bauchi Television Authority (BATV), followed by service at the state Ministry of Tourism and Culture, greatly influenced and shaped his leadership journey.

Mr Yakubu described journalism as a noble and credible profession that had contributed immensely to his personal and professional success.

He encouraged journalists to maximise opportunities for self-development and to prepare for life after retirement.

The emir, however, lamented the poor remuneration of journalists despite the risks associated with the profession and called on relevant authorities to improve their welfare and working conditions.

The emirs also condoled with the NUJ over the death of a Channels Television reporter and prayed for the speedy recovery of members injured in a recent road accident while on official duty.

They further prayed for sustained peace in the state and Nigeria, thanking journalists for their solidarity visit.

Earlier, the NUJ chairman, Mr Sa’idu, said the visit was to congratulate the emirs of Duguri and Lame on their appointments.

He added that it was also to reaffirm the union’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote peace, inclusiveness, and grassroots governance across the state.
